Will the upcoming generation know the Mighty Ducks? Is it possible to have a kids sports movie hit like that anymore? With Kevin pulled away on important business, Tommy and Mike reach into their personal lives as fathers to discuss introducing the Mighty Ducks to the newest generation, whether it’s even possible to have a cultural phenomenon like the Mighty Ducks anymore, and the state of sports movies for kids at this point anyway.
Show Notes
Chucky Scuds made his debut appearance on the Quack Attack way back in Episode 51. He made subsequent appearances, but congratulations to him and his wife on his son.
If you want to check out the parenting book that Mike spoke about it’s Baby 411. He recommends it and it was useful for him, but he also recommends doing your own thing and figuring out what works for you and your baby.
The new age of kids sports movies and TV shows
Disney+ is leading the way — at least anecdotally from what Mike has seen — when it comes to kids sports movies.
The Crossover and the story about the Antetokounmpo family are two different things. The Crossover is Disney+ ~30 half-hour show based on a novel. It came out in 2023. Rise is a ~2 hour Disney+ movie about the Anteokounmpo family that came out in 2022.
Disney+ also has Chang Can Dunk, which is another basketball movie. It also has Safety, a 2020 biographical movie on a Clemson safety.
The streamer also of course had Big Shot, which ran for two seasons and was cancelled in the same press dump that Mighty Ducks: Game Changers was. Other than Safety and the Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, every other sports offering focused on basketball, which may be a look at the state of where the U.S.’s sports interest lie, or where Disney+ thinks it’s subscription-paying audience is.
Thanks to @PhilHoov for the #QuackQuestion: “Do we know who actually defended the district 5 title the season after the ducks won it? Is that where Tammy, Tommy, Karp, Peter and Terry were during D2?”
